Santa Maria de Idris e San Giovanni in Monterrone
Santa Maria de Idris e San Giovanni in Monterrone,
In the beginning these two rock churches were distinct and separate but adjacent to each other. Today they are named together because in fact, starting from the 19th century, a corridor was created that made them communicating. The Monterrone (hence the name of one of the two) rises on tufaceous boulder overlooking the Sasso Caveoso. The church of the madonna dell ‘Idris is half dug out of the rock and half built after the collapse of its barrel vault in the 15th century. The interior is extremely simple. Once the iconoclastic frescoes filled the walls that have now been lost due to looting and neglect. We mention only a few that have remained clearly visible: Christ Pantocrator, Archangel Michael, St. Nicholas, Sant’Onofrio.
This church, together with the Santa Lucia Alle Malve rock church and the San pietro Barisano rock church is managed by OLTRE L’ARTE Società Cooperativa a r.l.
